Neon- it’s bold, in your face, loud, crying out for attention. Or rather, it used to be. For this summer season, however, it looks like it’s taking on a more sophisticated, yet still flirtatious, approach. Neon is brilliant, glowing, luminous, radiant- all things you want your skin to be– except it’s in your clothes. But don’t take my word for it, look around to what’s trending, and you’ll get an eyeful of brilliant blues, glowing greens, radiant reds, luminous yellows and every shade in between.
My struggle with neon isn’t that I don’t like vivid colors in my wardrobe, although as you’ve read, I’m a neutral’s girl all the way; my issue with neon has to do with me. I’m pale, I’m blonde, and I never felt like I could pull it off.
But after just a -few- years 😉 of seeing this trend come and go I’ve found a way to work it into my wardrobe because while I love my neutrals, I know the impact a flash of color can have in what you wear and how you feel. So let’s take a ride through the resplendent and learn how to wear these shiny shades.
Before we get into how to wear it, let’s decide which neons are right for your skin tone.
THE BEST NEON COLORS FOR PALE SKIN TONES
I’ve found two key factors to look for:
1. Is the neon-tone subtle?
2. If not subtle, is it dark?
This loudly lucid trend tends to drown me out, so a bright but less obvious color is usually my first choice. This top by Balmain was perfect for complimenting my natural tones and warming up my complexion.
If I can’t find an understated neon, but still love a particular piece, I look for it in darker tones, but stick to the pinks and purples.
THE BEST NEON COLORS FOR MEDIUM SKIN TONES
Girl, go crazy! A medium skin tone already has a lovely natural glow that’s only magnified by bright colors. A splash of orange will make you look like you’ve been kissed by the sun. So don’t be shy, experiment and be bold!
THE BEST NEON COLORS FOR DARK SKIN TONES
Dark tones are my favorite to play around with neons. Vibrant neon colors are allowed to be themselves against darker tones. Blues and fuchsias look particularly striking but don’t rule out those gleaming greens.
Now that we know which radiant road we’re taking let’s have fun exploring:
HOW TO WEAR NEON

“LESS IS MORE”
LET YOUR NEON “POP”
As if neon needed another way to stand out, consider making it pop even more against dark clothing. When I decided to play with the neon trend, I stuck with my go-to black. These sexy Givenchy stirrups tone down my neon pink top, elevating it; but it doesn’t silence the color too much.
OR TONE IT DOWN
Pairing neon with white helps take the color from “extra” to every day. Instead of looking like you’re ready for a rave, you’ll look fresh and summer-ready.
FEELING NOSTALGIC? WHAT ABOUT A BRILLIANT BELT BAG?
NOT SO SUBTLE SHOES
“Go Big or Go Home”
For those with confidence, pull out the stops and rock an all neon look regardless of your skin tone. While the style may be overwhelming to some, anyone who loves fashion and understands trends will appreciate your look for what it is and what it represents: the carefree and fun. Because neon doesn’t take itself too seriously; it shouts from the rooftops that you love who you are and you’re not afraid to show it off to the world!
Whether you’re subtly working this sophisticated sheen or you’re singing shouting it’s praises, do it with a wink. This summer, while the trend is still around, be a little flirtatious, go ahead – make the first move, see what it spurs. And, if you’re lucky, neon will inspire you to experience your version of eating jelly beans in a bathtub while rocking your Louboutin’s.
