Showing some skin can be tough for all of us, especially as we get older. Whether we realize it or not, when we are hitting the town, we all tend to gravitate to a certain body part we feel comfortable exposing. It could be your gorgeous gams, or your sexy shoulders, or maybe your amazing abs. Or conversely, you show nothing because you can’t possibly drum up one body part that would look good uncovered. Sound familiar? Well, it’s time to change that mentality. It’s time to grin and bare it.
While some seem not to be phased by showing a little (or a lot of) skin, for most of us, revealing more skin than usual is a step out of our comfort zone, a comfort zone that encompasses hormone changes, age, skin changes and the effects of childbearing. Regardless of whether you hit the gym once a day or once a month, your body will change over time. That’s just a fact. And, that change can bring a crash in confidence and disillusion of how our bodies actually look. I’m here to debunk this negative self-talk. You are as gorgeous as ever, and your skin is dying to be loved and on display.
So how do you gain the confidence to …bare it!?! For starters, you have to remember that what you see in the mirror isn’t necessarily what everyone else sees. I have friends that are mid-30’s and dress like nuns. I have told them time after time to “just try this style” or “that cut would look amazing on you” or even “you are NOT allowed to dress over the hill this time!!” They may have a 24-inch waistline, but see something completely different. Or think their underarms are sagging, but actually, have incredible, defined biceps. Sometimes, we just have to have someone give us that gentle nudge or quiet compliment to realize we may not be 22 anymore, but we still look amazing.
Arms + Shoulders
How about looking at the glass half-full going forward? Hormones may have made your stomach bloat like a balloon, but maybe it inspired you to eat healthier, and you’ve shed some pounds elsewhere. Age may have stripped your bottom half of muscle tone, but maybe it encouraged you to start Pilates, and you’re once-voluptuous tone has transformed into a lovely long and lean look. Children may have taken your perky B’s to a place down under, but running around after your 2-year-old has given you the legs you always dreamt of … I promise you’re hotter than you realize. Oh, and the confidence you’ll have hitting the town in an outfit that looks incredible on you and also shows just a little more skin than you’re used to will rock the room.
Are you starting to rethink your outfit for your date night on Saturday, now? You go girl. Don’t forget the importance of skin prep – that can really make or break how you feel showing it off. Exfoliate, shave, lotion, body oil, even apply a little self-tanner if that helps. Having clean, buff moisturized skin will make you feel like a million bucks.
So, how much is too much skin? My advice is to pick a body part. It is perfectly acceptable to wear a fun, form-fitting mini dress as long as you’re not exposing much on top. Same goes for a low cut or open back top. Rock it with some leather leggings, skinny jeans or a beautiful maxi skirt. Pick and choose how you expose and be mindful about overexposure, meaning turning into someone who shows too much at once.
Whether it’s a dinner out with your husband or a drink with a girlfriend, show a little skin. Have a look at your beautiful self in the mirror on the way out and embrace what your body is now, versus what it used to be. Take a deep breath and grin and bare it … 🖤
