When someone says “neutrals,” what colors immediately come to mind? For many of us, we jump to black and different shades of brown. Those are, and always will be classic neutrals. They are safe, easy to layer, and feel comfortable throughout the inclement weather and frigid temperatures that the winter months bring us. But, while these neutrals will always be timeless, there is another palette that absolutely can and should be part of your cold-weather “neutral zone”: white, cream, grey, and silver. This palette brings a fresh lift to 2020 and the sometimes “heavy” neutrals in our closets and can work particularly well during the festive season (which for some of us is still going!).
I love this clean, bright base for so many looks right now, whether you are attending a dressy post-holiday get together, a charity luncheon for your business, or just want a fresh update on your everyday look. And, NO, I am not suggesting you wear all winter whites in a slushy mess! Choose to experiment with this new palette on those days when the weather cooperates. These colors – combined or on their own – can feel just as classic and stylish (and perhaps a bit more soft and luxurious) as our darker neutral palette.
Confident, classic, clean, and unexpectedly bold. White instantly feels chic, elevated, smart, and even a little bit intimidating (in a good way). Wear this neutral from head-to-toe or as a clean basic. Check out this Nili Lotan cashmere sweater. I see it paired with coordinating wide-leg wool pants, or light grey jeans.
White’s softer-spoken sister, cream evokes feelings of cozy fireplaces and cocoa. Don’t let this color fool you; it makes an incredible neutral because it flows easily with so many looks and palettes and isn’t as “look at me” as it’s brighter sister. For 2020, look for inspiration in this classic, this monochromatic look – stunning.
Blondes, brunettes, redheads, and silver-haired beauties delight. Grey is a shade that just plain works for so many skin types and hair colors. Pantone’s Ash, a cool-toned grey, was chosen as one of its eight spring 2020 color classics, refer to as ‘solid and strong.” Darker and stronger or lighter and softer, grey looks incredible when paired with a bright (or soft) white and feels effortlessly chic. Check out this gorgeous wrap – you might just want to wrap yourself in it. Throw in a silver belt or heels, and you will be ready for an evening out in Vail or a cozy dinner in with family.
The metallic in your 2020 neutral palette is a classic silver. Silver is a fresh take on the gold we’re seeing everywhere (don’t worry I still love gold!) and pulls this new neutral collection together, giving it a little excitement, a little edge. Work silver into your belt, shoes, bag, or even hair accessory and watch this neutral collection come together.
